Liz Phair - Shatter
“Shatter” is one of those songs that’s almost too amazing to exist. Phair’s guitar playing is very simple, but it’s genius. Sinuous doesn’t begin to describe it. It sounds like mental illness in a way, with all the gentle feedback gnawing away at its skeletal beauty. And after almost three minutes pass, she starts singing! And it gets exponentially better.
There’s really no verse/chorus/bridge structure to this song, even though it makes it sound like there is. It’s more like thesis/antithesis/synthesis. And you’re left with: What? The feeling you get when you’re hospitalized for approaching perfection.
I never really listened to Liz Phair back in the day (or Sebadoh, for that matter). It was in the air, but I never brought the records home.
